Alibaba has launched a new AI model, Qwen3.8-27B, designed to run on consumer devices such as laptops, and has revealed the weights for Qwen3.8 Max. This signifies a competitive landscape in the open-weight developer ecosystem between Meta and Chinese AI companies. Alibaba claims that Qwen3.8-27B performs well in coding, professional tasks, and research, asserting that it is equivalent to other models that are ten times its size. Meta is strengthening its open-weight strategy through its Muse Glimmer model, and Alibaba's announcement comes shortly after Meta's strategic shift. According to Hugging Face, there are 151,448 derivative cases of Qwen-based models, which is 2.6 times more than Meta's figures. Experts predict that the company providing the most capable open-weight model will gain a competitive edge. Terminal AI operates by calling models outside of data centers and the cloud, which reduces latency and minimizes data transfer. Alibaba is increasing its presence in the open-weight market through Qwen, which relates to the flow of AI models outside of cloud environments.
