Can Recent Crypto Exchange Closures Signal the End of the Bear Market?
The closure of three centralized cryptocurrency exchanges in the past month has drawn the attention of many analysts. Following the announcement of the cessation of operations by BitMart and the exit of BitMEX from the market, AscendEX also announced that it would halt its activities starting in July. This has led some experts to speak of the beginning of a "cleansing" in the centralized exchange industry.
According to Mihan Blockchain, analysts emphasize that while the removal of weak companies can help make the market healthier, this trend alone does not signify the end of the bear market or the beginning of a new bullish cycle, as macroeconomic factors, liquidity, and regulations will still play a decisive role.
These closures come at a time when Storj Labs, the developer of the decentralized cloud storage network, has also officially declared bankruptcy.
Why Are Centralized Exchanges Shutting Down One After Another?
Simon Dedic, founder of Moonrock Capital, believes that the recent closures of several centralized exchanges have revealed structural weaknesses in the business models of these platforms. According to him, many of these exchanges rely on a continuous influx of new users and capital to maintain their revenue, and with the reduction of this flow, their continued operation becomes difficult.
He wrote on social media platform X:
The revenue model of these exchanges has a fundamental flaw; it requires a constant stream of new users. When this flow stops, the business also comes to a halt. One of the less recognized advantages of a bear market is that the market is in the process of healing.
Ran Neuner, CEO of Crypto Banter, considers this event part of the natural cycle of the market. He believes that market bottoming is not a momentary event but a process during which the market stabilizes, leaving only the stronger players.
He predicted that the next market cycle would be dominated more than ever by licensed exchanges and institutional investors. From Neuner's perspective, the reduction in the number of exchanges could also amplify its effect on the market if liquidity returns.
Meanwhile, StarPlatinum, a cryptocurrency market analyst, believes that the closures of BitMEX and BitMart may mark the beginning of a broader wave of centralized exchange exits. He attributes this trend to a combination of the ongoing bear market, reduced interest from retail investors in altcoins, declining trading volumes in the derivatives market, increased regulatory pressures, and high operational costs.
Exchange Closures: A Sign of Market Health or a Warning Signal?
Although all three exchanges have cited different reasons for halting their operations, a common factor has been the increasing pressure of market conditions. BitMart and BitMEX have stated that their decision is part of a business strategy review and not due to financial bankruptcy. However, some analysts believe that the decline in market share and failure to attract investment or sell the business are key factors behind BitMEX's exit.
On the other hand, AscendEX has cited the implementation of new EU regulations known as MiCA, failure to attract investment, and market pressures as reasons for its closure.
Experts believe that the removal of weak companies can contribute to improved service quality and sustainability in the industry in the long run, but it may also increase market concentration and allocate a larger share of transactions to a limited number of large exchanges.
Conclusion from Mihan Blockchain
The wave of closures of centralized exchanges can be seen as a sign of the gradual maturation of the cryptocurrency industry; a stage in which companies with weaker business models are eliminated from the market, and stronger players solidify their positions.
However, this event alone cannot signify the end of the bear market. The path of the next market cycle will still depend on factors such as monetary policies, liquidity levels, regulatory frameworks, and the return of investor demand.
