Coinbase Launches AI System CEEcil with Long-Term Memory and Proactive Task Management Capabilities
Coinbase has announced the architecture and applications of its internal AI system CEEcil, designed to function as an AI agent similar to a team member that can be @mentioned in Slack. CEEcil possesses long-term memory, proactive follow-up, and judgment capabilities. Currently, CEEcil can assist teams in handling production incidents and answering expert knowledge queries, with plans to expand into multiple AI agents tailored for specific teams that can continuously remember, actively participate, and complete actual tasks. CEEcil can proactively join relevant Slack discussions, send emoji responses, and automatically follow up when issues are left unaddressed. The system previously refused to submit documents containing customer identity information to Git, suggesting the use of desensitized versions or compliant storage, demonstrating its security judgment capabilities. CEEcil is composed of Go services and an AI agent runtime, connecting memory retrieval, knowledge bases, real-time queries, and tools like Slack through MCP. Coinbase has implemented a real-time "kill switch," limits on invocation counts and spending, an auditing mechanism, and requires human review and merging of its generated code. CEEcil retains team context through a three-layer memory mechanism, including extracting decision information from authorized channels, integrating short-term observations into long-term summaries, and retrieving historical memories and real-time data on demand, utilizing a layered model architecture to reduce costs and latency.
