Bitcoin developer Luke Dashjr proposed a method for selecting a proof-of-work (PoW) algorithm for hard forks using the block hash from Testnet4. Bitcoin researchers pointed out that if hash power intervenes at a specific time, the selection results could change. Dashjr announced a plan to choose candidate algorithms based on the last character of the next block hash generated on Testnet4 after 11 PM on the 11th. He submitted a mapping file that connects each character to the candidate algorithms in advance and disclosed the SHA256 hash of the file to prove that the mapping was predetermined. However, the controversy arose not from the mapping file but from the blocks used for selection. While disclosing the hash value in advance can prevent post-hoc changes to the mapping, there are concerns that hash power could be concentrated on Testnet4 at a known time to attempt to generate a specific block hash. Antoine Poinsot, a Bitcoin researcher, stated that using Testnet4 based on a predetermined time is 'completely nonsensical.' Testnet4 is a network for development and experimentation, with different difficulty adjustment rules than the mainnet, and the method of selecting a single block at a specific point in time is controversial. Changes to the proof-of-work algorithm could impact mining equipment, miner incentives, and the network's security structure.
