ECB Survey Shows 0.2% Crypto Adoption in EU Businesses

Prefer us on GoogleThe European Central Bank (ECB) survey reveals that only 0.2% of businesses in the euro area accept cryptocurrency or stablecoins for online purchases, while cash dominates at 92%. The survey included 8,205 companies and indicates that cash is the most widely accepted payment method, surpassing cards at 88% and mobile payments, which increased from 36% in 2024 to 68% in 2026. Despite the implementation of the Markets in Crypto Assets (MiCA) regulations, EU payment firms have been slow to develop crypto solutions, missing out on benefits like reduced transaction fees and fewer intermediaries. The survey highlights a significant gap in crypto adoption compared to emerging markets, with only 1% acceptance at physical points of sale. Mark Aruliah from Elliptic emphasized that MiCA provides a framework for payment processors to create compliant crypto payment solutions tailored to the European market.
