The defense spending of the 27 member countries of the European Union (EU) is set to increase to €418 billion in 2025, while the European Central Bank (ECB) is assessing the growth effects and inflationary pressures. Defense spending will account for 2.2% of the EU's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2025, and it is expected to rise to €454 billion in 2026. Defense investments exceed 32% of total defense spending, with procurement of equipment estimated at €115 billion. However, cooperative procurement constitutes only 24% of equipment expenditures, indicating a need for improved joint purchasing and production efficiency. ECB Chief Economist Philip R. Lane is expected to discuss the impact of increased defense spending on inflation. The ECB has stated that the ongoing conflict in the Middle East has raised prices in the Eurozone, and while defense and infrastructure spending can contribute to investment, there are upward risks to medium-term inflation forecasts. According to research by the Czech National Bank (CNB), the inflation effects of increased defense spending manifest with a lag, and the higher the domestic production share of defense equipment, the stronger the price response. Financial market reactions have been mixed, as defense stock prices reflect high spending expectations but do not guarantee price stability or sustained growth.
