G20 Supports Regulatory Path for Digital Assets, Strengthens Anti-Money Laundering Enforcement Requirements
The G20 finance ministers and central bank governors held a meeting in Asheville, North Carolina, from August 31 to September 1, supporting the establishment of a clearer regulatory path for the growth of digital assets and including digital assets in the U.S. agenda for the 2026 presidency. The G20 stated that digital financial innovation can support broad economic growth, with the private sector playing a significant role in driving related innovations. The meeting focused on the extended operation of global stablecoins, cross-border payments, and large payment systems, and supported the adoption of the ISO 20022 data standard. The G20 called on the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) to prioritize jurisdictions with significant virtual asset activities and to strengthen the enforcement of anti-money laundering standards. As of July, among the 149 jurisdictions assessed by the FATF, only one fully complied with the relevant standards, 34% were largely compliant, 43% partially compliant, and 22% non-compliant.
