Mbappé's Open Letter to France After His Team's Disappointment in the 2026 World Cup
Kylian Mbappé wrote an open letter to all of France following the 2026 World Cup. The message was directed to everyone involved with the French national team. Mbappé expressed gratitude to his teammates, the fans, the coaching staff, and the Federation.
He also had words for Didier Deschamps, who recently stepped down from his position as head coach of the national team. "I have already told Didier what I needed to say, he knows it," the statement reads.
"This World Cup ends, but the story continues," wrote the Real Madrid star, in a text filled with recognition for those who supported the team throughout the tournament.
"It hurts and it will continue to hurt, I won’t lie to you," acknowledged Mbappé when referring to the elimination. However, rather than dwelling on the defeat, the forward also expressed his enthusiasm for the challenges ahead and for the bond he maintains with the supporters of "Les Bleus."
"There will be other matches, other summer or winter nights when we will all gather in front of that same game, with the same unbroken desire," he concluded, in a message that combines self-criticism, gratitude, and the promise to try again.
Mbappé's Complete Letter
"A month of emotion. Of overcoming. Of pride in wearing the colors of France.
Of passion, above all, the same that drives us on the field and that drives you, in front of the screen as well as in the stands. That is what we have lived together, an incredible story.
We do not bring a collective trophy. It hurts and it will continue to hurt for a while, I won’t lie about that. I accept the top scorer title with pride, but it would have been much better with the cup as well.
Perhaps we owed ourselves a prettier ending. But we do not always choose the ending of the story, we choose what we put into it, and we gave it our all. We are proud of that.
Thank you to my teammates. Without their work, their runs, their passes, without that team spirit that has taken us from the first to the last match, I would never have been able to score so much. This title belongs to both the collective and to me.
As a child, I dreamed of playing in a World Cup, at least one. I have played three, I have won one, and this year, I had the pride of competing with the captain's armband. I will never forget it.
You must have stayed up late, sometimes until the heart of the night depending on the time zones, to watch us play on the other side of the world, you gathered at home, in bars, with family or friends, all over France and beyond.
Others were as close to us as possible, in the stadiums, with the flag over their shoulders. Children with shining eyes, men and women of all backgrounds and all generations, gathered around the same pleasure, that of sharing. That is the strength of this sport.
And you have never abandoned us, not even in the hardest moments, not even when we deserved it the least. We have written this story with millions of hands, not just eleven on the field, driven by the same passion.
To Didier, I have already told him what I had to say, he knows. Thanks to him, to all his team as well, physiotherapists, cooks, trainers, drivers, all those who no one ever sees and without whom none of this would be possible. And to those who welcomed us in the United States throughout this competition.
Football, at its core, remains a game. A game we take very seriously, that we work a lifetime to try to master, but a game after all, with its simple rules that have not changed since we started playing it: ball, goal, desire to score. That is why it unites us all with the same passion.
This World Cup ends, but the story continues. There will be other matches, other summer or winter nights when we will all gather in front of that same game, with the same unbroken desire. We have not finished playing together."
Thank you for everything.
