Peter Schiff stated on X that artificial intelligence competes with Bitcoin for capital, electricity, and data center capacity. This comment comes amid advancements in computing infrastructure investments and some mining companies reallocating resources towards AI. Schiff believes that AI is a direct competitor to Bitcoin, vying for speculative capital, energy supply, and the physical infrastructure of computing operations. The demand for data centers is expected to grow, with global energy consumption projected to rise from 485 terawatt-hours to 950 terawatt-hours by 2030, primarily driven by AI. In the United States, electricity demand is also expected to increase. Bitcoin mining companies are directing assets and infrastructure towards AI and high-performance computing, with CoinShares highlighting the scarcity of powered land, which has been gradually developed by mining companies over the past decade, featuring grid connections, high-voltage structures, and cooling conditions. Galaxy emphasized the growth in demand for data centers in the U.S., which is expected to reach 45 gigawatts by 2030. Contracts disclosed by industry companies indicate that previously mining-related capacities are being converted to AI projects. TeraWulf has signed an agreement with Anthropic, while Core Scientific, IREN, Cipher Mining, and Hyperscale Data are also involved in multi-million dollar long-term agreements.
