Romania Shuts Down Nuclear Power Plant Due to Danube Drought, Begins Electricity Imports

Romania has completely halted operations at the Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant due to a critical drop in water levels in the Danube, losing 680 MW of generation capacity. The shutdown of reactor No. 2 began at 7:00 AM, and by 11:00 AM, the plant ceased supplying energy to the grid. The first unit had previously been shut down. The nuclear plant accounted for about 20% of the country's total electricity production. Due to the shutdown, Romania has started importing electricity during lunchtime to cover the deficit. The main reasons for the shutdown are prolonged heat and the lowering of water levels in the Danube, which is used for cooling. Attempts to increase the water flow have been unsuccessful. According to forecasts, the resumption of operations at the nuclear plant is not expected for at least ten days. An official statement from the company assures that the reactors are in a safe condition and pose no threat to people or the environment. Authorities assure that the shutdown of the nuclear plant will not affect household consumers and essential services, with restrictions only impacting large industrial enterprises.
