Target has appointed Chandru Nair as its first Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer (CAIO). This move aims to expand the application of generative artificial intelligence (AI) from shopping recommendations to inventory management, store operations, and decision-making. Nair previously served as Senior Vice President of Stores, Data, AI, and Innovation at Lowe's, and he stated his intention to align Target's AI strategy with actual stores and customer touchpoints. He plans to focus on improving inventory management and enhancing decision-making speed. Target has already implemented generative AI tools in some of its operations and is also running an interactive AI program to help customers find gift recipients. The company announced that AI-driven traffic increased by 2000% in the first quarter of this year compared to the same period last year, with an overall increase of about 400% in AI-driven traffic across all retail sites. The impact of this appointment on Target's revenue recovery or stock price can be assessed through future metrics such as customer utilization rates, operational efficiency, and inventory accuracy.
