Donald Trump, the President of the United States, has warned of strong retaliation if U.S. troops are killed in an attack by Iran. Trump stated via Truth Social, "Iran will pay a price many times over for every American soldier they kill." This statement comes after recent attacks by Iran that resulted in U.S. casualties. Trump is scheduled to attend a ceremony on the 21st for the return of the remains of fallen U.S. soldiers. Meanwhile, mediating countries such as Qatar and Pakistan are proposing a ceasefire to halt the conflict between the U.S. and Iran. According to Bloomberg, the mediators have suggested a plan for both sides to return to the status quo before July 9, and a senior Iranian official mentioned that a 10-day ceasefire plan is also being discussed. Currently, the U.S. and Iran continue to be embroiled in a conflict over the Strait of Hormuz, with the U.S. claiming that Iran is obstructing shipping traffic. U.S. casualties are also increasing, and Iran claims that over 50 people have died due to recent U.S. airstrikes. The market believes that tensions in the Middle East are unlikely to ease easily unless navigation in the Strait of Hormuz is normalized and negotiations between the U.S. and Iran resume.
