On August 22, Vercel CEO Guillermo Rauch announced that the share of open-source models in AI Gateway Token traffic has reached 62%, more than doubling from 28.4% on June 24; during the same period, the share of closed-source models dropped from 71.6% to 38%. Vercel AI Gateway tracks the actual model invocation volume on its platform and does not represent the entire AI market. In July, the total amount of tokens increased by 59% month-over-month, with open-source models accounting for over one-third of the total. DeepSeek surpassed Google to become the second-largest model vendor by token consumption. The token volume for OpenAI and Anthropic is also accelerating. However, closed-source models still hold economic value; in July, open-weight models accounted for about 36% of tokens but only 8.6% of expenditures; Anthropic used about 30% of tokens to achieve 65.1% of expenditures. In the future, closed-source cutting-edge models may only account for 15% to 25% of tokens but could capture 60% to 90% of economic value.
