Wages for low-income earners in the U.S. increased by 4.1%, but data from the Federal Reserve and regional banks signal caution regarding the end of the K-shaped economy. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) rose by 3.4% year-over-year in July, while the core CPI increased by 2.5%. The energy index surged by 14.7% over the past 12 months, putting pressure on low-income households. The BLS reported that the real average hourly wage in July decreased by 0.1% compared to the previous year, although the nominal average hourly wage rose by 3.2%. The Bank of America Institute noted that the after-tax wage growth rate for low-income earners is higher than that of middle- and high-income earners. PNC analyzed that the spending gap between low-income and high-income households has narrowed to its smallest in three years. The Federal Reserve warned that the growth rate of real wages for the bottom quartile is likely to be lower than that of other quartiles, while the Richmond Fed assessed that the U.S. economy continues to exhibit K-shaped characteristics. The July CPI, real wages, and private consumption data point in different directions, indicating that signs of recovery in the U.S. economy and structural disparities are emerging simultaneously.
