What is the Alpenglow update?

Alpenglow is a complete overhaul of the consensus mechanism of Solana. It replaces two fundamental technologies of the blockchain that have been in place since its launch:

  • Proof of History (PoH) — the timestamping mechanism that was at the heart of the original Solana whitepaper
  • Tower BFT — the consensus protocol used for voting since 2020

These two components are being replaced by two new protocols: Votor and Rotor.

Votor — the new voting protocol

Votor replaces the incremental voting system of Tower BFT with an ultra-lightweight vote aggregation model. Validators can now aggregate their votes off-chain before submitting the final confirmation, allowing blocks to reach finality in just 1 to 2 voting rounds.
