A Chinese open-weight AI model is set to account for 41% of global downloads by spring 2026, putting pressure on the US enterprise AI market. According to a report by Hugging Face, China has surpassed the US in both monthly and cumulative downloads. OpenRouter analyzed that the performance gap between Chinese and US models remains at 3 to 6 months. The price difference is even more pronounced, with OpenAI's GPT-5.5 API priced at $5 for input and $30 for output per million tokens, while DeepSeek V4 is offered at $0.14 for input and $0.28 for output. Companies are utilizing AI models for various tasks such as code reviews, summarization, and search, with price and stability being key factors in their choices. Airbnb has reported that AI handles one-third of its customer support in North America. Concerns over data sovereignty and security are impacting the speed of adoption, and Siemens is collaborating with Alibaba to develop software that supports AI capabilities. Changes in AI cost structures are directly linked to corporate operating expenses and security assessments, and the advantage of low-cost models is not fixed. Companies are selecting AI models based on performance, price, deployment methods, and data control.
