Georgia Recovers Six-Figure Cryptocurrency

A resident of Cobb County, Georgia, has recovered a six-figure sum of cryptocurrency with the assistance of the Attorney General's office. The funds were previously lost on a fraudulent cryptocurrency platform. The victim had contacted a stranger through social media, who built trust by using the name of a mutual acquaintance and guided the victim into participating in so-called profitable cryptocurrency operations. The platform initially allowed small withdrawals, which boosted the victim's confidence, and then displayed false profits and an increasing balance until the funds disappeared. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation tracked most of the funds to a cryptocurrency exchange, and the Attorney General's office's Cyber Crime and White Collar Crime Division collaborated with the Investigations Division to obtain a court order to force the return of the assets. The nonprofit organization Operation Shamrock worked with the GBI on this case. GBI Director Chris Hosey stated that cryptocurrency scams exploit trust and urgency, advising victims to contact local law enforcement. This case occurred weeks after Governor Brian Kemp signed House Bill 945, which took effect on July 1, requiring virtual currency kiosks to issue warnings about losses, capping transaction fees at 18%, and allowing first-time victims to receive refunds within 72 hours.
