CoinWorld reports:
After the launch of XRP spot trading on Rakuten Wallet, foreign media cited analysts from the platform stating that this move is not just about adding a new trading product, but corresponds to their judgment on the path to implementing crypto payments: both price stability and transfer speed need to be addressed simultaneously for corporate settlement scenarios to truly expand.
Rakuten Breaks Down the Issues into Two Parts
According to reports, Rakuten Wallet's senior analyst, Yasuo Matsuda, believes that the vision for cross-border transfers proposed by Bitcoin in its early days has long been constrained by two real issues: insufficient processing speed and excessive asset price volatility. The former affects payment efficiency, while the latter increases risks during the holding and settlement processes.
He stated that stablecoins have already addressed the price volatility issue to some extent, while XRP's design goal leans more towards fast transfers. The combination of the two brings them closer to the actual requirements of enterprises for clearing and settlement tools.
Beyond Retail Access, Greater Focus on Corporate Transfers
After this launch, users can purchase XRP through Rakuten Wallet and convert it into Rakuten Cash for use within the Rakuten ecosystem, including retail networks like Rakuten Market. Users can also buy XRP using Rakuten Points without needing to invest cash directly.
Yasuo Matsuda believes this design helps lower the psychological barrier for ordinary users when accessing crypto assets. However, reports indicate that Rakuten is more focused not on retail consumption itself, but on the needs for corporate fund allocation and cross-border payments.
The scenarios he mentioned include internal group settlements, cross-border transfers related to employee expenses, and B2B payments processed through Japanese accounts. Such expenditures are typically ongoing and larger in scale than single retail payments, thus seen as a more realistic application direction.
Why Rakuten Specifically Chose XRP
In terms of asset selection, Matsuda listed liquidity as an important criterion. He stated that XRP currently ranks among the top crypto assets globally by market capitalization, with market depth more suitable for accommodating remittance and settlement needs, rather than just remaining at the speculative trading level.
The report also mentioned that Rakuten views this launch as part of a larger change. Their judgment is that on-chain real-world assets and security tokens are bringing about new categories of financial products, and financial institutions that have been cautious about crypto assets in the past are beginning to shift towards more proactive participation.
However, while the article mentioned that the regulatory environment is changing, it did not specify any concrete policies or institutional adjustments.
