Google Android 17 Introduces Encrypted Client Hello Privacy Feature

Google's Android 17 now activates Encrypted Client Hello (ECH), enhancing user privacy by concealing web request destinations from the network. This feature encrypts the site name during the connection handshake, preventing intermediaries from logging the domain. However, ECH only protects traffic to sites that have adopted the standard, limiting its effectiveness until wider adoption occurs. The network can still see the destination server's IP address and data volume, allowing for some level of activity inference. Additionally, Android 17 enables Certificate Transparency by default and mandates app permission for local network scanning. This privacy enhancement coincides with ongoing legal challenges regarding data control on Android devices, highlighted by the case of Samuel Tunick, the first American charged under federal law for using a duress password in GrapheneOS.
