For financial advisors, Ethereum staking is no longer a niche topic from the world of crypto enthusiasts, but a practical tool for managing ETH. As large investors increasingly utilize Ethereum, the returns from participating in the proof-of-stake mechanism are increasingly coming into focus for corporate balance sheets and investment strategies.
How Ethereum Staking Works
Ethereum staking involves placing ETH to participate in the Proof-of-Stake network. Instead of mining, the network uses validators: they confirm transactions, propose new blocks, and receive rewards for their efforts.
To independently run a validator, you need 32 ETH, configured software, and a continuously operating infrastructure. Smaller amounts can be staked through staking pools, centralized exchanges, or liquid protocols.
How Much Can You Earn and What Affects Returns
The yield from ETH staking is typically measured in annual percentage rates and is often perceived as a range of a few percentage points, approximately 2-5% per year. The final rate varies: it is influenced by the number of validators, the total amount of staked ETH, fees, MEV, and the chosen staking method.
There is no single most profitable option for everyone. Running your own node offers more control but requires 32 ETH and technical expertise. Pools allow participation with smaller amounts but add dependency on the operator. Exchanges are easier to start with, but the client takes on the risks of the platform and its withdrawal rules. Liquid protocols offer more flexibility but introduce risks from smart contracts and the representative token itself.

For independent staking, you first launch a validator, install and maintain the necessary software, and then deposit 32 ETH. This path requires monitoring the node's operation, as technical failures can lead to penalties.
Starting through pools, exchanges, or liquid protocols is simpler: choose a provider, check fees, withdrawal conditions, reputation, and security, then stake ETH according to the chosen product's rules. In a liquid model, the client can receive a representative token that reflects their staked position.
Withdrawals depend on the model. In native staking, ETH remains locked during participation in the network, and exiting can take time. In liquid staking, the underlying ETH continues to earn rewards, and the client retains more options to utilize the value of their position through the representative token.
ETH Yield Becomes a Line Item on the Balance Sheet
Ether staking is no longer an activity reserved for users deeply immersed in the crypto market. Institutional participants are already securing a significant portion of all ETH staked, and this share continues to grow.
A telling example is Bitmine's quarterly report: the company indicated that 98% of its revenue came from staking. This indicates an important shift: for public companies holding ETH, network rewards are becoming not just an additional bonus, but a substantial source of income.
This is where one of the key differences lies between companies with reserves in ETH and those holding Bitcoin. Bitcoin reserves do not inherently create built-in yield. An ETH-based treasury has a different mechanism: coins can work within the network and earn rewards directly from the blockchain. The scale of this yield is already significant enough to influence how companies report their financial results.
Why ETH Staking Gains New Meaning in 2026
Many investors are buying and staking ETH as a bet that a significant portion of future financial infrastructure will develop on Ethereum. The network's roadmap supports this logic: developers are simultaneously moving towards post-quantum resilience and increased scalability.
One important milestone is expected to be Glamsterdam, anticipated in the second half of 2026. This upgrade is seen as part of a broader development line for Ethereum, where network resilience and the ability to handle more load become key conditions for long-term institutional participation.
Decentralization remains a separate goal. The wider the distribution of the validator set, the harder it is to censor the network and the lower the risk of failure due to a single point of vulnerability. For institutional investors, this is not an abstract idea: when they hold and stake ETH, they simultaneously earn yield and participate in network protection.
For companies and clients who already have ETH in their portfolios, staking turns a passive position into an active asset. The liquidity question depends on the chosen model, so it is more convenient to compare it across several key parameters.
- Native staking: liquidity is limited; ETH is locked for the duration of participation in the network; withdrawal is possible after exiting staking; coins work directly in the network and earn rewards.
- Liquid staking: liquidity is higher; the client receives a representative token that reflects the staked position; the value of the position can be managed while the underlying ETH continues to earn rewards.
The staking infrastructure is also gradually becoming closer to institutional standards. The established separation of roles between the proposer and builder, included in the Glamsterdam plan, should reduce the dependence of block production on off-chain intermediaries. For large holders, this means a clearer and more transparent connection process, and for staking providers, more convenient management of validator parks on behalf of clients.
Advantages and Risks of ETH Staking
The main advantages of staking are clear: ETH can generate passive income, support network operations, enhance decentralization, and maintain the potential for the asset's value to grow.
Risks also need to be considered in advance. These include technical failures, validator penalties for violating network rules, loss of access to funds, platform or smart contract risks, and regulatory changes.
What a Consultant Needs to Check Before Recommending a Product
Staking products may look similar on the outside, but they can differ significantly in risks, limitations, and infrastructure requirements. Before making a recommendation, it is useful to quickly go through key questions.
- Who covers the losses if a validator (the device and node infrastructure involved in block confirmation) is penalized for violating network rules? The client must understand in advance where the zone of responsibility lies.
- How the provider ensures resilience: through infrastructure reservation, stake distribution, decentralization of operators, or a combination of these approaches.
- Does the product lock ETH for the entire staking period or use a liquid model where the client can manage the value of their position while it continues to generate income?
- What constitutes the rewards. Basic protocol payments to validators for proposing and confirming blocks now play a more significant role compared to MEV --- additional income arising from the order of transactions within a block.
- How predictable is the yield? Protocol rewards are directly linked to the network's issuance and appear more stable, while income from MEV can vary significantly. A shift towards protocol payments makes the client's final yield more understandable.
- How asset storage is structured. Custodial solutions are often chosen due to regulatory requirements, but they do not always automatically enhance security. It is important for the consultant to understand what the client gains and loses compared to direct integration into DeFi.
When choosing a platform for Ethereum staking, it is essential to look beyond the promised yield. The reliability of the provider, fees, withdrawal conditions, reputation, liquidity support, and overall security level are crucial.

The regulatory and technological landscape surrounding digital assets is changing rapidly. For consultants, this is important: ETH staking is increasingly linked not only to yield but also to storage, infrastructure protection, and market maturity.
