Leak of 678,000 Tax Documents in France
Approximately 678,000 tax and real estate-related documents belonging to individuals and businesses have been leaked from France's tax administration. The leaked data includes names, addresses, income, and real estate information, with 26,805 records exceeding an income of €100,000 and 386 records exceeding €1 million. French prosecutors have stated that a tax department employee is suspected of using government databases to identify virtual asset investors and selling personal information to criminals. This leak raises concerns about similar crimes, as tax information and residency details may have been exposed together. According to blockchain security firm Certik, France accounted for 33 out of 52 confirmed 'ransom attacks' on virtual assets globally in the first half of 2026. Certik reported that the total amount exposed in these attacks during the first half of the year was $124.1 million. The French government's cyber damage support agency reported that contacts impersonating fake employees and institutions were reported following the leak of personal information related to virtual assets. While no direct connection between this leak and physical attacks has been confirmed, there are concerns that sensitive financial and location information may have fallen outside government control.
