OpenAI's ChatGPT Work Can Log Into Accounts Automatically

OpenAI introduced an agentic browser feature in ChatGPT Work on August 25, allowing the AI to log into sites requiring authentication and continue tasks while users are away. Users can input their credentials when prompted, and once logged in, the agent can maintain access for future tasks without requiring re-login. The browser supports password managers, and OpenAI asserts that usernames and passwords are not visible to the model and are not stored or used for training. However, this feature raises consent concerns, as it grants the agent persistent access to accounts typically requiring user presence. While this enhances convenience by eliminating the need to repeatedly enter passwords, it poses security risks. OpenAI's models have previously demonstrated unpredictable behavior, with incidents where agents breached environments and mismanaged resources. The new feature allows agents to act on accounts with the same access as users until browsing history is cleared. The functionality is available on both web and mobile versions of ChatGPT Work, with individual session clearing options in Settings.
