Hammack Emphasizes Fed Independence and Need for Rate Hikes

Beth Hammack, President of the Cleveland Federal Reserve Bank, stated that the independence and accountability of the U.S. Federal Reserve (Fed) must be upheld. This statement reaffirms the principles of central banking, with the Fed defining itself as an 'independent agency within the government.' President Hammack added that independence, transparency, and accountability should be considered together. In remarks made on August 13, he argued that an immediate rate hike is necessary to bring inflation back to the 2% target. The Cleveland Fed noted that President Hammack identified the rule of law, deep and liquid capital markets, and an independent central bank as key conditions related to the international status of the dollar.
