Paid Rides in Amazon's Zoox Robotaxis Approved in the U.S.
The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has granted Zoox, a subsidiary of Amazon, permission for a limited commercial rollout of its driverless, pedal-less robotaxi. This marks the first federal approval for charging fares for rides in autonomous vehicles. The company will begin offering paid services in Las Vegas, with plans to expand to other markets later. The regulator has allowed up to 2,500 of these vehicles to be deployed on the roads over the next two years, but has imposed strict limitations on the company's operations. The vehicles cannot be sold to private individuals, and all operators must be based in the U.S. Zoox is required to report any incidents and may lose its permit if safety is threatened. Regulators are also working on federal safety standards for automated driving. This decision comes amid public concern over driverless vehicles interfering with emergency services and potentially ignoring road work. Recently, Zoox temporarily recalled 105 autonomous vehicles for software updates due to issues with smoke detection in emergency situations.
